To kick off the guest lecture series Räume der Rekursion (Spaces of Recursion), Kathrin Busch deals with spaces of weakness – both in concrete and figurative form. What spaces does the weak self inhabit? How permeable or sealed, how protective or porous are these spaces in which it unfolds? The implicit thesis of the lecture: that weakness – at least in art – is less fought against or reduced than expanded and savored. Busch examines how sensitivity and vulnerability are remarked in the aesthetic. In doing so, she assumes, with Emmanuel Levinas, a fundamental weakness that is not overcome in the recurrence that forms our subjectivity, but which must be thought of as another form of empowerment.

Kathrin Busch teaches philosophy at the Berlin University of the Arts. She is currently working on epistemologies of the aesthetic in the genre of auto-theory and on figures of a philosophy of weakness. Selected publications: (ed. with Barbara Gronau and Kathrin Peters): ): An den Rändern des Wissens. Über künstlerische Epistemologien, Bielefeld 2023; (ed. with Christoph Brunner and Knut Ebeling): Permeationen - Durchdringungen von künstlerischer Forschung und ästhetischer Theorie, Leipzig 2024; (ed.): Radikale Passivität: Politiken des Fleisches, exhibition cat., nGbK, Berlin 2020.
