The Forum Baukultur* invites you to a practical discussion with Andreas Hofer, Director of IBA'27 (International Building Exhibition 2027 StadtRegion Stuttgart)
Building is both a remedy and a crisis. And the construction industry, as the largest economic sector, meanders between conservative preservation, green-washing and fantastic promises of the future that autocratic regimes in the Middle and Far East are making to us today. International building exhibitions contribute to this history and are at the same time a phenomenon of reflection and self-assurance. In 1927 at the Weissenhof in Stuttgart, there was a lot to catch up on: a young generation, the Werkbund with its promise to combine industrialization with affordability and aesthetics, stormed ahead, lived cosmopolitanism and created a monument in one year that still impresses us today.Interbau1957, theInternational Building Exhibition 1987both in Berlin, theIBA Emscherpark1999 in the Ruhr region stood for upheaval and helped shape it.
When the idea for an IBA in the Stuttgart region emerged around 2015, there was a lot of criticism. A country that had become entrenched in funding logic questioned why one of the most prosperous and booming regions was looking for such a format. However, the idea of thinking about the future before the hut burns down has something groundbreaking about it. As a result, an astonishing portfolio of transformation areas has emerged, many failures in the provision of living space have become apparent, an industry that is fundamentally unable to speak between self-assurance and crisis.
In this field, the IBA'27 seeks a new image of the region. Always committed to making, to building, open to dialog with people who wonder what a sustainable world could look like.
