Language support

Erasmus OLS – Online Language Support?

The European Commission offers Erasmus+ grant holders (students, interns and staff) free online language courses (OLS) to help them achieve the necessary language level for a stay abroad.
Participants in the Erasmus programme can take language tests and language courses via the EU Academy platform.

What is the EU Academy?

The EU Academy is an open online learning platform run by the European Commission. In addition to language tests and language courses, it offers various learning content and MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses).

Who can take the OLS?

  • Erasmus+ beneficiaries: students, interns and staff.
  • The platform is also available to university staff (STA/STT) and students who are staying for less than 14 days, provided that the language of instruction or working language is available on the OLS platform.

What can the OLS be used for?

  • Submission of test results to the host institution.
  • Self-assessment of language skills through language tests that can be taken at any time during the mobility period.
  • All language courses and language tests offered can be taken as often as desired.
  • Users can use the platform for three years.

Which languages are available?

Online language support is available in all official European languages and other languages of the programme countries.
You will have access to free learning resources, including introductory videos, quizzes and courses at A1 level for beginners and A2 level for advanced learners in 30 languages.
Discover what OLS has to offer on a tour: Using OLS.

Registering for OLS language tests

You need an EU login to use the service: instructions (tutorial) on how to register on the EU Academy platform can be found in the download section in the right-hand column. Another short introductory module guides you step by step through the registration process.
Registration only takes a few seconds. Once you have created your profile, you will have access to OLS and numerous other free short courses on the EU Academy.

Preparatory, self-organized language courses

Self-organizedpreparatory (official) language courses can be financially supported after consultation with the International Office, depending on budgetary constraints up to a maximum of 300.00 euros.

IMPORTANT: Language courses in the host country cannot generally be counted as part of the stay, unless they are part of the curriculum.
