department space&designstrategies

space&designstrategies  is a transdisciplinary field of study that blurs conventional boundaries between theory and practice, merging the realms of visual arts and public culture, architecture and the performing arts. It does not represent a fixed discipline, but rather a dynamic field where diverse practitioners converge to explore situated, collaborative, and context-sensitive approaches.

The program is intended for students who wish to develop environmental practices that critically examine the role of art and artists within public institutions as well as emerging environments and autonomous spaces.
It encourages students to engage with the complexity of contemporary contexts through critical and transformative practices.

The course is aimed at designers who want to shape and explore spatial strategies in a broad and dynamic sense—social, cultural, political, and ecological. The course propose an approach:

 ↪ Grounded
Students strengthen their proximity to contexts, not only as critical observers but as participants in everyday community life.

 ↪ Interactive
The process is rooted in immersive field experiences and in the development of horizontal learning environments. Knowledge, always local and specific, emerges through collective inquiry leading to shared interpretations.

 ↪ Action-Oriented
Students learn to engage social challenges not just intellectually, but through tangible spatial interventions.

 ↪ Engaged
This programme positions design as a deeply ethical and political practice. An approach based on listening, dialogue, and co-production of new knowledge, practices, and projects in close collaboration with the social context.

Students work in an experimental environment composed of a series of shared spaces that form the core for making and exchanging knowledge, complemented by lectures and writing labs. This environment includes collective ateliers and studios, a bio-lab, a print room, a cozy room, a kitchen-laboratory, and metal and wood workshops.
International excursions, photo shoots, shows and exhibitions round off the program.

Job profile
Graduates of raum&designstrategien work in areas where transdisciplinary work, strategic thinking and a critical-innovative approach to space are required, i.e. in interdisciplinary planning teams for urban and rural areas, public administrations promoter of inclusive forms of urban regeneration, participatory processes, festivals or as individual artists. Students gain a basic knowledge of urban spaces, learn artistic means of interpretation and intervention and try out possibilities of mediation between actors and users in the space. To this end, basic tools are taught, from theoretical, drawing, graphic and technical means to cinematic and performative methods and the planning and construction of spaces on a 1:1 scale.
