Tina Frank ist Professorin für Visuelle Kommunikation an der Kunstuniversität Linz, wo sie die gleichnamige Abteilung leitet. Ihre Arbeit verbindet Grafik-Design mit Musik, Daten und Improvisation, indem sie komplexe Information in performative Bilder übersetzt. Mit bald drei Jahrzehnten Erfahrung erkundet ihre Praxis, wie Gestaltung auf innovative Weise Wissen vermittelt.
Sie hat Designunternehmen gegründet und geleitet und mit international tätigen Organisationen zusammengearbeitet, für die sie Webseiten, Corporate Designs und Leitsysteme entwickelte. In enger Zusammenarbeit mit Musiker:innen und Künstler:innen entwickelt sie audiovisuelle Installationen und Performances, die an renommierten Orten und auf Festivals weltweit zu sehen sind, darunter Centre Pompidou, Atonal Berlin, Sonic Acts Amsterdam und Ars Electronica Linz.
Im akademischen Feld trägt Frank wesentlich zu postdigitalen Formaten bei, die analoge und digitale Medien gleichermaßen erkunden, mit Fokus auf Daten- und Musikvisualisierung. An der Kunstuniversität Linz leitet sie seit 2023 das co.lab Beta Now, ein Forschungslabor zur Performativität von Bildern, das untersucht, wie sich Bilder in der Echtzeit-Improvisation zur Vermittlung wissenschaftlichen und kulturellen Wissens einsetzen lassen. Seit 2025 wirkt sie im PEEK-Projekt Beyond Glaciation (2025–2029) als Senior Researcher mit.
Zwischen 2019–2024 baute sie gemeinsam mit der Trondheim Academy of Fine Art (NTNU) eine Kollaboration auf, in denen audiovisuelle Performances über telematische Wege entwickelt und improvisiert wurden. Zur selben Zeit war sie Senior Researcher in der transdisziplinären Gruppe ISOTYPE reloaded zu Otto Neuraths Bildstatistik und unterstützte das Wiener Gesellschafts- und Wirtschaftsmuseum in der Entwicklung eines Vermittlungsworkshop. Frühere Initiativen umfassen die Symposienreihe Multiply (2009–2014) und die experimentelle Publikationsplattform splace-magazine.at.
Ihre Arbeiten waren an Orten wie Ars Electronica, Centre Pompidou, Atonal Berlin und Sonic Acts Amsterdam zu sehen, befinden sich in internationalen Sammlungen von Videokunst und digitaler Synästhesie und wurden in den experimentellen Sparten zahlreicher Filmfestivals gezeigt; ausgezeichnet wurde sie unter anderem mit dem Diagonale-Preis für innovatives Kino und dem IIID Award für herausragendes Informationsdesign. Die übrige Zeit verbringt sie damit, Musik in bewegte, abstrakte Bilder zu übersetzen – zuletzt mit dem Rucksack voller Daten am Gletscher.
