Exclusive by Design was created as part of an open brief on inclusion and exclusion at the University of Arts Linz. Rather than explaining or illustrating exclusion, the work enacts it: the result is a book that cannot be opened. Bound from both sides, it offers no point of entry. It does not exclude some - it excludes everyone.
In this consequence, the mechanics of inclusion and exclusion become tangible. The refusal of access generates curiosity and desire, revealing how exclusion operates: it produces meaning and desire at the expense of others. The project pushes this logic to the point where it tips and exposes its own failure. In doing so, the book loses its function as a carrier of information entirely.
Design constantly makes decisions about who is shut out and who is not. In commercial design, exclusivity is deliberately instrumentalized to generate desire and maximize profit. The title names this directly: exclusivity not as an oversight, but as a ruthless design decision.
