‚to paint for the ear‘[1]: Music’s Synaesthetic Shadow

Referent: Simon Shaw-Miller ist Senior Lecturer am Birkbeck College (University of London) und dort Head of School der School of History of Art, Film & Visual Media, seit 2005 auch Honorary Research Fellow der Royal Academy of Music.
Simon Shaw-Miller beschäftigt sich in seinen Publikationen mit den Themen Synästhesie und Interferenzen zwischen Bildender Kunst und Musik.
Thema: This talk argues for a synaesthetic consideration of music, not in terms of clinical synaesthesia, but as a necessary corollary to the concept of absolute music.
‘Absolute music’ in the early 19th century emerged alongside the concept of the ‘work.’ The talk traces the rise of the musical virtuoso and the conductor, and reviews concert hall design in order to expose art music’s visual shadow. The period from the emergence of absolute music to the establishment of recording and broadcasting technologies also gave birth to the cultural paradigm of modernism.
At the close of this period the American composer John Cage poses a radical challenge to many of modernism and music’s central assumptions. The talk concludes with an analysis of two of his works from the Imaginary Landscape series.
