Clouds for my grandmother

Quilt, 150 × 150 cm

With her textile work Wolken für meine Großmutter, Elisa Schmaderer finds an artistic form for dealing with the grief associated with the death of loved ones. Despite the concrete memories, the work remains abstract and comforting. The artist picks up the thread from her grandmother, who did a lot of sewing herself, and uses it to sew this quilt. As she does so, her thoughts revolve around the deceased: “She was a very warm woman, but often also difficult and hurtful. I’ve tried to face up to her memory. The beautiful and not-so-beautiful moments. How do I mourn someone who triggers such ambiguous feelings in me?”

Elisa Schmaderer works with a wide variety of media, with a focus on textiles. In her work she explores themes such as memory, time, and the balance between something and nothing.

The work "Clouds for my grandmother" was shown as part of the BestOFF 2024 exhibition.
