In the European campaign Twin it!, the ministries of culture of the European Union member states, in collaboration with national institutions, are implementing high-quality 3D digitization of tangible cultural heritage. In the second phase of Twin it!, three digitized objects from Austrian cultural heritage were selected, two of which were created at the University of Art and Design Linz: the Goldbergkees, a glacier documented as part of the FWF project Beyond Glaciation and the DIY Skatepark Sankt Marx.
The DIY Sankt Marx Skatepark in Vienna is an open space built and used by the skateboarding community itself - a place of collective practice, artisanal improvisation, and urban subculture. The unconventionally designed concrete landscape - bowls, transitions, graffiti, mosaics - documents knowledge, aesthetics, and working methods that have hardly been documented to date and are in the process of being lost to urban memory.
This skatepark is not merely viewed as a sports facility, but as a space for cultural possibilities. Preserving it in digital form helps ensure that subcultural, self-organized urban spaces can continue to be experienced virtually - even if they soon disappear in physical form.
