The PhD programme of the University of Arts Linz invites you to the defense of Jürgen Buchinger's dissertation "Making Public Space: Generating Discourse through Moving Image Practices in Urban Contexts".

The commission is made up of Prof. Ruth Anderwald (University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna), Prof. Sabine Pollak (University of Arts, Linz), Prof. Fred Truniger (Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts), Prof. Amalia Barboza (University of Arts Linz) and Prof. Alexis Dworsky (University of Arts Linz).

The artistic PhD project Making Public Space explored the potential of time-based media to create chance encounters and space for discussion in urban spaces in order to encourage city dwellers to engage with the design of their cities. Topics such as gentrification, the search for free spaces and our coexistence with non-human city dwellers were addressed directly at the places in the urban space where they occur. The experiments carried out as part of the research process include collaborative filming, large projections in urban space, interactive sculptures and reflective video works.

Jürgen Buchinger is an artist and researcher specializing in time-based and interactive media art. He holds a BA in Art History from University of Vienna and a MA degree in Film from Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts. Buchinger's doctoral resaerch was funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation and conducted at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts and the University of Arts Linz and supervised by Sabine Pollak and Fred Truniger.
