16mm film, yarn, 2024/25

Direct Film is a technique in which the image is not captured with a camera, but instead drawn, scratched, or otherwise manipulated directly on the film material. The starting point for this work was an exploration of the role of women in film history. In the early years of cinema, film editing was often considered "women's work" because it was compared to sewing. In this work, I sewed on 16mm film using different threads, overlock stitches, and stitch lengths. The seams not only interfere with the image, but also with the soundtrack. As a result, the seams are not only visually, but also acoustically experienced.
