Smile, you’re on camera

Lucia Claus, Hani Elias

This installation explores the boundary between private and public spaces. It features a large world map with small screens showing live streams from indoor spaces in locations across the globe. Connected by visible cables, the screens form a network that invites viewers to reflect on how watching and being watched shapes behavior. With nearly one billion CCTV cameras in operation globally, surveillance has become routine. This has effectively normalized a culture of observation that subtly alters how we act through the awareness that we are never fully alone.

Lucia Claus is a visual artist from London, currently pursuing a master’s degree in Interface Cultures in Linz, Austria, who has experience in live audio-visual performance. Building on her background in performance design, she creates real-time visuals for musicians. Recently, Lucía has been developing sensors and incorporating live data into her work, alongside exploring collaborations with dancers and gamifying her visuals to create more interactive and participatory experiences.

This work was realized for Deep Space setting in collaboration with the department Timebased & Interactive Media Arts (Joachim Smetschka and Holunder Heiß).

Die Arbeit Smile, you’re on camera will be shown as part of IC @ Ars Electronica 2025, exhibited at PostCity, Bahnhofplatz 12.
