Biography

Anna Miscena completed her BA at Christie’s Education in London and her MA in Art History at the University of Glasgow. Her master’s thesis examined the reception of fourteenth-century medieval illumination and its role in shaping manuscript readership. Following professional experience in the art market  (Christie’s London and Dorotheum Vienna), she completed her doctoral thesis at the University of Vienna, where she investigated theories of seeing from modernity to the present, with a particular focus on theories of surface perception. As a doctoral researcher, she was a member of the CreA Lab, working in an interdisciplinary team of computer scientists, psychologists, museologists and art historians, to investigate processes of looking and visual attention through eye-tracking, and cooperated with Viennese cultural institutions, including the Galerie Belvedere and the Leopold Museum.

Her research explores the history, theory and phenomenology of seeing, with a particular interest in how forms of looking and attention are shaped by cultural and historical contexts. Her work brings together art historical and theoretical approaches with empirical methods from the study of visual behaviour.
