Deceiving Happiness

From an early age on, trauma teaches us to suppress our feelings and build an invisible barrier to the world surrounding us. This facade serves as self-protection to skillfully ward off invaders of personal spaces and borders. Seemingly happy and carefree, but often vulnerable and isolated.

In this collection, Max Menschhorn explores social protection mechanisms and translates them into a cross-over between physical environment and wearable soft sculptures.

Fluffy teddy plush, soft knitted and terry fabrics in playful, organic shapes envelop the body. Pastel colors such as baby blue and mint green further emphasize the toy-like silhouettes and disguise the fact that this is a suit of armor to lull others into a false sense of security. A role that we play.

Elements flowing into one another expand the body and create surreal proportions. Stuffed and padded, they invite us to cuddle and yet keep us at a distance.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

For Max Menschhorn, fashion is a language of emotions, a medium for self-reflection. Design processes begin with an emotion – his own, which he unravels and explores – transforming it into sculptural, organic forms that embrace the wearer like a second skin. Unconventional patterns emerge intuitively, creating garments that not only clothe but also comfort and cheer, like a wearable embrace.

Born in 1999 in Bad Goisern (Austria), he started his career by studying at Fashion School Ebensee. After graduating in 2019, he went on to complete his master tailor certification, grounding his practice in traditional skills. He later earned a bachelor’s degree in Fashion and Technology at the University of Arts Linz (2025) and is currently continuing his studies there at the master’s level.
