Establishing a sense of how to finally present an artwork in various given exhibition situations and environments is not only an integral part in its development, but a vital skill for any artist in general. We believe that showcasing the student’s art on a variety of occasions will allow them to acquire this skill in a hands-on manner. Hence, at Interface Cultures we aim to provide our students with ample opportunities to present their works in diverse settings, whether it be in the course of the annual Interface Cultures exhibition at the Ars Electronica Festival, department/university events like “Sankt Interface”, “Rundgang”, and “Open Day”, international collaborations, exhibitions evolving from lectures, or self-organized exhibitions in local off-spaces and venues. The yearly reoccurring exhibition events are:
Ever since the foundation of the Interface Cultures master’s programme in 2004 there have been very close ties to Ars Electronica. Besides regular knowledge transfer among both institutions, e.g. via lecturers, the annual exhibition of student projects at the Ars Electronica Festival is one of the core elements of this relationship since 2005. Currently, second- and third-year students have the chance to show their artworks within this vibrant and widely renowned festival to gather valuable experience on the practicalities of exhibiting in a professional context. Here are some impressions of past years:
The event “Sankt Interface” on St. Nicholas Day has been a staple of the Interface Cultures year for a long time. First established in 2014 it is primarily intended to welcome new students into the community and give them the chance to show the first interfaces they produced in the Master’s programme in a relaxed and festive setting. Also, each year interesting international speakers are invited to give an insight into their artistic practice or research topic. Last but not least, a procession to worship the holy interface is one of the highlights of the event. Watch some impressions of the past years:
“Rundgang” and “Open Day” are annual events held by the University of Arts Linz where departments present themselves and show art projects of their students to interested parties – whether external, or internal. Especially Rundgang is a great opportunity to see what other departments are doing and a fixpoint in the Interface Culture year. In comparison to Sankt Interface the Rundgang is a possibility for first year students to exhibit in an open setting and gather valuable experience with group exhibitions.
Besides the fixed occasions mentioned above, there are also plenty of other opportunities to exhibit, whether they are based on collaborations with other institutions, on lectures, or on the initiative of students to engage with the local art spaces in Linz.
